Detailed feature list is available here: Vehicle Tracking Features
In 2002, Optima Consulting developed a low cost real-time vehicle tracking system based on GSM/SMS transmission. This system was enhanced in 2003 with additional functionality and a new, simpler user interface.
The system is composed of:
- a small interface box (called "OptiBox") installed in each vehicle, connected to a GPS unit and a GSM phone
- a mapping software application ("OptiMap") displaying the position information received from the OptiBox units through a dedicated GSM handset connected to the host computer
The system is compatible with many commercially available GPS and GSM units (see Vehicle Tracking Features for details). It does not require specific or dedicated equipment to be purchased: if your vehicles are already equipped with a navigation system and a mobile phone, then the Optibox can be fitted in with no additional equipment.
Tracking System Overview

Optionally, the system is capable of receiving position information from APRS HAM radios (or from GSM and APRS simultaneously):
- an APRS radio is installed in each vehicle and connected to a GPS unit
- the mapping software displays the position information received from the APRS units through a dedicated APRS radio unit connected to the host computer
The mapping software application features easy-to-use display functions for the vehicules being tracked. Each vehicle may be shown or hidden independently. It is possible to save specific tracks for later reference. Various vector or raster maps may be integrated as a background to suit the user needs.
A specific version of the mapping software is also available as an add-on to the Mapinfo Professional GIS desktop application, allowing for all sorts of simple or complex geographical analysis of the data.
The complete vehicle tracking system, including both GSM and APRS units, was successfully tested during the 2002 and 2003 editions of the Luxgsm World Balloon Trophy international hot-air balloon competition. The public was able to follow the progress of the competitors in real-time on a large video screen, and simultaneously on the internet.
